You must activate the machine. On it are a set of eight knobs arranged as shown. They are all pointing straight downward. But to power the machine you must turn all the knobs to point straight upward. There is no limit to how much a knob may be turned, but you may only turn one knob at a time. However, whenever a knob is turned, all adjacent knobs turn as well but at half the speed.
